What Does Radical Therapy Mean to Me?

The people who have fought to overturn the systems of oppression that affect us all have been branded radical. And here we gladly pick up that mantle and continue in their struggle. As a therapist, I believe the work of undoing the violence of systemic oppression shouldn’t be left outside the therapy office. Because systemic oppression affects all aspects of our lives including our social lives, workplace, and families, it can be helpful to disentangle the effects of this trauma in our therapeutic work.

Dealing with the effects of systemic oppression on an individual level is a difficult process. And it is unfair that the work of overturning these systems and healing from their harm is often only left to the people most affected by oppression. With this in mind, it is an important part of this practice for me to support the people/ organizations that are doing that work on a systemic level.
